Many a case of horrid GI distress have been resolved with home made
chicken soup. Just boil some chicken pieces and a few mild veggies
(carrots, onion, celery, parsley, garlic, etc.) for 2 to 4 hours in
plenty of water. Strain off the veggies & chicken. Bone the chicken and
put the meat back into the broth. Salt to taste. This is a nourishing,
but mild and soothing food/beverage for an upset GI tract. In extreme
cases, just serve the broth without chicken. Chicken broth alone is very
nourishing even without the meat. Drink as much as needed to stave off
hunger. It's amazingly satisfying.

I was in severe gastrointestinal distress 2 1/2 years ago (diagnosed
allergic eosinophilic gastroenteritis ). I was losing weight at an
alarming rate and couldn't eat anything without severe heartburn, stomach
pain, nausea and headaches. My GI specialist couldn't do a thing to help
me other than IV feedings (TPN), but instead he referred me to a
naturopath who put me on the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) as
described in "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gottshall. The SCD
is initiated with chicken soup and apple juice gelatin & a few other very
mild foods. Chicken soup/broth and apple juice gelatin were all I could
consume for several weeks. I was amazed at how satisfying this diet was.
I didn't feel miserably hungry, and the pain relief was a blessing. It
wasn't fun or exciting to live on such a restricted diet, but it rescued
my health & vitality without TPN!

The SCD is a special gluten free diet originally designed to treat
Crohn's disease, but it's equally effective for a number of severe GI
diseases including colitis, celiac disease, eosinophilic gastroenteritis,
etc.

I'm much better now and I'm amazed at the variety of foods I can now
consume. I don't have to stay on the SCD all the time like I used to,
but when I am occasionally troubled with GI distress, I do the chicken
soup thing and I'm all better, usually in less than 24 hours.
