Hi listmates,
Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to my plea for help with
a gf sleep aide. Everyone who has used ambien, reported using it with NO
gluten problems. Although some people did not like the ambien, it was not
due to gluten. I got LOTS of great advice on natural sleep remedies, which
I intend to incorporate into my usual daily routine. The ambien will be
around for when I am really having problems. For example, every time I am
"glutened" I cannot sleep and the natural remedies don't work. But,
hopefully with the help of a natural sleep aide on a regular basis, I can
avoid too many sleepless nights.

Thanks again for all the great advice. I have copied specific replies below
and in the second summary.

At a natural food store I was highly recommended a product called "Deep
Sleep" by Herbs, Etc. (www.herbsetc.com ). But this product contains
oat seed. I just called them and they will formulate it for me without
the oat seed in the liquid form (they do it for another celiac
customer). I haven't tried it yet, but I can't wait!

Try Source Natural Melatonin. But not the quick-release version (that's the
kind the dissolves under your tongue). That has sorbitol. But the kind that
you swallow works great and it's GF.

I take Tylenol PM quite successfully.

My housemate was prescribed Lunesta and then Ambien. The Ambien actually
cause his insomnia to increase. He now just drinks some store brand Nyquil
some nights and gets a full nights sleep with it alone.
Hi, I go only natural routes. I use Night Time by Andrew Lessman
(www.HSN.com <http://www.hsn.com/>) to help me get to sleep, combined with
Proloftin
(www.proloftin.com) which helps me to stay asleep. I'm also of the age
where a progesterone cream helps hormonal balance (also, Dr. Lee suggests
that progesterone helps grow bone; whereas estrogen stops bone loss--pass it
on). Best wishes.

Add turkey breast as a meat source for your supper meal.
(there is truth to Turkey making people sleepy!) Avoid food and beverages
for 2 hours before bed. Having something
in the stomach to digest can impair sleep. Put the lights down low in the
evenings; install a dimmer switch if
need be. It makes a difference! Find out if reading a boring
magazine/boring book in bed
makes you sleepy or alert. If it makes you want to sleep, great, use it as
a sleep aid. If it keeps you awake, then avoid reading
within 2 hours of bedtime. Wake up earlier in the morning. Other: Meditate
and exercise (especially outdoors in the fresh air)

I am currently using warm milk taken
with St. John's Wort and Siberian Elm Root to relax before I go to
sleep. Good luck!

Some natural methods I find helpful for promoting sleep are.... exercising
about 6 hours before, long warm bath before bed, stretching/yoga before bed,
dim lighting before bed, and about an hour before sleeping eating a
high-carb food - such as a potato - followed by a food high in tryptophan -
such as turkey, tuna, eggs, etc. A high carbohydrate snack stimulates the
release of insulin, which allows more tryptophan to enter the brain to make
serotonin and melatonin. This food combo really helps have a natural
sedating effect with me. Just eat lightly right before bed. Hope that helps.

Try taking 1/2 of a 1 mg. Lorezapam. That works great for me and it stops
the bowel spasms you get with a gluten reaction.

I get on the exercise bike 30 minutes before bedtime. It helps me sleep.
Eating cooked apples and blueberries knocks me out-probably the natural
sugar??? Carbs in the evening helps.

This is a drug free sleep aid that helps for a number of people. You
purchase "sea bands" and use them. They are sold for nausea but when
applied about half an hour before going to bed and worn all night they have
been very effective in promoting sleep. I received this tip from a
pharmacist.

I've had success with Valerian Root. I get it online from Natures
Sunshine; I've never had any gluten problems with this company.
Valerian Root is calming and seems to help me to fall asleep and stay
asleep.

I used to have HORRIBLE sleep problems - tried Ambien, and about 6 other
things. None worked at all, and most made me feel lousy. Then, as part of
something else, my vitamin B12 level was checked, and found to be extremely
low (which lead to me being diagnosed as celiac). Once I began on vitamin
B12 supplements, my sleep greatly improved. I did some research, and found
sleep problems were common with B12 deficiency.
