Adult coeliac patients do tolerate large amounts of oats.

The study lasted a period of 24 months. Here are a couple more responses I
received:

-------
The good ole grocery oatmeal did so much damage in my guts I live on tpn
and it nearly killed a couple of my sons.

-------
I just saw your summary.

One of the reasons I was so glad to see this was because it involved
children. Now you have responses from parents. Caution may be in order, as
this study was a fairly small one. (If the ones who dropped out however were
children I would think they'd have had to mention that aspect.)

When the issue came up before, I did my own research regarding children and
oats. I was unable to locate even one study, article, organization, or
doctor; that recommended that children consume uncontaminated oats although
plenty did maintain they were convinced of safety for adult celiac's
providing they were not cross-contaminated. I recall at least one mentioned
that - children were purposefully left out of studies - as a precautionary
measure since this was still controversial & if the outcome were that oats
caused a deleterious effect for celiacs - there might potentially be greater
& longer lasting problems for children. (ie: Body systems still in
formation & during growth stages, etc.) I have the feeling that the study
you have sited may very well be the first or at least one of the first ones
done which included children. Of course, I can't be sure of this - no one
has all info on CD & I don't have any inside track or anything - in fact I
know my info is no better than most have available & I am just one more
person with CD/DH.

I do think extra caution should be used with regard to usage by children.
This is my personal opinion, as is everything I've stated! I think it may
be best to wait for more experts to say uncontaminated oats are OK for
children.
