A few of folks raise some very valid concerns about eating out. I
think this message conveys the gist of their concerns the best:

“Please be aware that eating out is always risky since most of the
people preparing food, especially in popularly priced chains (as opposed
to small restaurants with a dedicated chef) are completely unaware, and
often not interested in the requirements of this diet.
My daughter is celiac and works in a privately owned steak/fish
restaurant that is more than moderately priced.  She is amazed at how
trusting most celiacs and people with allergies are when coming into the
restaurant--also how things are prepared in spite of instructions from
the customers.  Unfortunately---many kitchens just don't care.  She has
stood over the chefs in her restaurant when GF pasta was being prepared
and insisted that fresh water be used--regardless of what the patron is
told, the kitchen does not willingly bother to do this.
Grills are seldom cleaned and even when an ingredient is usually used
that may be GF, when the kitchen runs out (and this happens
frequently)--someone is sent to the local store to replenish on short
notice.  These busboys, often speak little English and do not worry
about brands.  They are told to buy an item and they come back with what
they find.  There is a tremendous amount of cross contamination that
occurs unintentionally--utensils go from pot to pot, vegetables reheated
in simmering pasta water, etc.
Additionally, some nights a sous chef is preparing a dish--normally GF
in recipe and he decides to add something not ordinarily used---his own
little variation.
So much goes on, that it is hardly a safe meal.
I don't know how often you eat out, but please be aware that it is risky
at best even when you are ordering plain food---when you move into the
more complex it is potentially dangerous.  Restaurant kitchens are very
busy places with many people involved in your meal.  It's a real gamble
to trust others with your health.
Don't mean to sound pessimistic, but please be aware and be careful.  It
would be lovely if everyone was careful but it just doesn't happen and
celiacs are very naive if they believe it does.”
