Dear Coeliac International and Coeliac UK listers,

I have been drawing your attention to the fact that the
supermarket chain Asda in the UK is marketing their own
brand products marked "GLUTEN FREE" when they are. I have
recommended them to some of you on the international list,
who are proposing to holiday in the UK.

Sadly they can no longer be trusted. Some two weeks ago,
Karin bought a box of their "Sugared Almonds" and found a
piece of liquorice, coated in the same sugar coating.

Sadly, she was so surprised that she swallowed it instead
of spitting it out again. She and I have tried our DAMDEST
to get the company's customer service department to take
this seriously. They haven't even had the courtesy to
reply confirming receipt of my e-mails, while Karin's
telephone conversation left her feeling that they could not
care less.....

For the moment, Coeliacs should be very suspicious of any
Asda own brand product marked GLUTEN FREE. It is clear
that their QA cannot be trusted and the chance that they
will act quickly to ensure no repeat is obviously very
small. A shame.....we were just thinking that we were
getting somewhere and now I'm having to use really HEAVY
techniques to get this company to do something about it. I
imagine their first step will be to take "GF" off the
packaging. What a mess! I'll let you know if we make any
progress to a better resolution.

Regards

David
