Subject: Dermatitis Summary

List Mates – Thank you so much for your responses (received over 30) to my questions about the cause of dermatitis and treatment.

Causes -
The majority suggested I had a reaction from the supposedly gluten free oatmeal I was eating for breakfast and the topical use of Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal. Also thought it might be Dermatitis Herpetiformis. Others suggested a staph eye infection; drinking soymilk; too much iodine from salt, seafood, and sea salt; household/skin/hair products (even the eco-friendly ones) containing formaldehydes and methylisothiazolinone; fragrance in all products; lack of lipase and other pancreatic enzymes and not eating enough protein; and canola oil in packaged products.

Treatments -
Give up oatmeal; drink coconut or hemp milk; topical benedryl or the liquid tabs; replace steroids with moisturizers such as shea butter, jojoba, or olive oil; do biopsy for Dermatitis Herpetiformis; elimination diet; paleo and grain free diet; lower iodine intake; Dr Bonner’s liquid soap for all cleaning; Free and Clear laundry and hair products; and check out the website www.imsforacure.org that explains mast cell activation syndrome and mastocytoses.

I did see a dermatologist on 8/15/17 – he did not think it was Dermatitis Herpetiformis – said it just did not look like it and did not want to do the biopsy. He discussed two types of biopsies – one in the broke out area and one in the clear skin. I was not convinced he was sure what he was talking about so no biopsy. It had been at least 6 days since my last oral dose of prednisone but still using topical steroids. Most of the swelling/redness faded but had stuff on my stomach/hands/leg and still itched some. I had done some online research and asked about using a topical steroid Desonide ointment 0.05% instead of the potent ones I was using so he prescribed it for me to use. I am scheduled to see an allergist on 9/14/17 but don’t know if that will be of any help.

I have stopped eating oatmeal and using it topically. Tried cutting back on the soymilk but don’t like the taste of coconut or hemp milk. Stopped using the topical steroids even though I still itch around my right eye, arms, and stomach some. I try to stay inside the house because being outside gives me problems now. I live in a small town and like to do yard/garden work plus have a farm that now has soybeans in so need to oversee and check on the buildings, mowing, fixing fence, etc. If I get outside to walk or do chores and get hot I start itching more. I may have discovered another cause for the dermatitis in talking to the guy that farms for me. He does no-till and uses Roundup to kill the weeds and then plants, however this year used 6 different herbicides because the Roundup no longer controlled the weeds. I am out at the farm every day so I was exposed to the new herbicides but there is no way to really find out the cause for sure.

Again thanks for all your help!!!!
