<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>>

This is my first posting to the group. [ long ].
I wanted to let the group know about aspects of my condition because I
believe I am in the possibly more unusual situation of being asymptomatic
and recently diagnosed (Jan of this year) but also falling into the
category of having neurological problems as my only indicator of CD. I had
the following symptoms:-

severe balance and coordination problems, twitching and jerking of muscles,
hypersensitivity of the skin: visual, speech and hearing problems and for
about 8 months what appeared to be something akin to Tourettes syndrome. I
was in hospital for occasions and treated with steroids and anti -
epileptic drugs for what was then diagnosed as infectious para
cerebellitis, and was really very ill and disabled by it .Once out of
hospital I put my self on a wide range of vitamins since I had been told
that my immune system had probably been affected by the viral infection I
had developed about 6 weeks before I went down with the neurological
complications.

It was only after extensive brain scans, lumbar punctures etc. that as a
final attempt to find out what was causing these problems that an endoscopy
was performed and the diagnosis of CD discovered. I have absolutely no
other symptoms. Since being on the vitamins and now on a strict GF diet I
have improved considerably and returned to work as a teacher. The Tourettes
symptoms of facial grimaces, odd vocalizations, and outbursts have all gone
since starting the vitamins and antioxidants.I have also improved since
being on the diet, and am virtually completely recovered apart from the
slight neurological residue of symptoms which remain but are not too much
of a problem....

Family history may be significant: a schizophrenic, a potential lupus
sufferer, a thyroid condition (which led to manic-depression) all exist on
my mother's side (her brother, sister and herself).
Following my diagnosis could they be coeliac too?
I will post developments to the group.
Anyone else made the connection between CD and the above? I'm curious!

Thanks for your help,

Ruth Chalkley (Northern England)
