Thank you to all who replied. The response has been overwhelming and
gratifying. I apologize for not summarizing sooner. We are beyond the
initial crisis and we finally have room to breath.

My wife's response to traces of gluten is anaphylactic shock and
convulsions, which is well beyond what is typical for celiac, and may
involve something beyond celiac, such as a full blown allergy to wheat
and/or gluten. We don't know, nor does our family doctor, but we do know
that gluten always triggers shock, so we treat gluten as if it were
cyanide!

The solution was to find a generic of the prescribed Reglan
(metoclopromide) that contained no dyes. I called the local pharmacies,
determined which in-stock generics were plain white, then called the
various pharmaceutical houses and attempted to speak with the in-house
chemist and/or pharmacist.

We settled on TEVA pharmaceuticals (1-800-523-6542) simply because I was
able to speak directly with the chemist who understood my request and was
able to produce the information we needed within about ten minutes.

If you call a pharmaceutical house, do not settle for anything less than
either (1) speaking directly to a chemist or pharmacist or (2) having a
written guarantee that the product is GF either mailed or faxed to you.

In my opinion and in my experience, messages relayed to and from a
chemist/pharmacist by a customer service representative are NOT to be
trusted.

NEVER EVER!

deni (my wife) required an MRI last week, and in our attempt to determine
the GF status of the contrast agent, we encountered "The Service
Representative From Hell" who refused to talk to me because I was not a
doctor, even after I explained that I was calling from the doctor's office
at his direction and as his representative. When the nurse was finally
able to get the doctor to the phone between patients, the service agent
placed him on hold, then took his phone number and called back to make sure
he was really a doctor!!! After all of this, she would STILL not confirm
that the contrast agent was GF, and the doctor was STILL not able to get
past her to speak to a chemist/pharmacist!! The need for the MRI was so
great that we decided to take the risk. Unfortunately, deni started
convulsing when the contrast agent was injected, and the MRI could not be
completed.

Again, I cannot overemphasize the importance or speaking DIRECTLY to the
chemist or pharmacist at the drug company!!!

Special thanks to three respondents, a Pharmacist, a Veterinarian, and a
Ph.D. in chemical physics (who is a professional scientific translator
specializing in pharmaceutical chemistry) whose suggestions led me to this
solution.

Many replies urged us to develop a relationship with a pharmacist. We are
fortunate in that our family doctor and our pharmacist are husband and
wife, so we already have that area covered!

Ginger was suggested as an anti-emetic. We made tea from ground fresh
ginger root, which helped a lot, but did not solve the problem completely.

A very good book was suggested, "A consumer's dictionary of food additives"
by Ruth Winter, M.S, which contained a wealth of information, but not
enough on the dyes. I used the library's and intend to buy a copy!

Thanks again
