Hi fellow list members,

I think we're making progress with some of the food companies.
While contacting manufacturers for the new food database we're
working on, I have discovered that a lot more companies have
written lists to send out this year compared to last year.
Companies that provide information on different food sensitivities
have more information about gluten than they do for peanuts, corn,
soy, lactose, or animal byproducts. I can only attribute this to the
hard work of the different celiac groups and to individuals who take
the time to educate these companies about our special needs.

I was particularly interested to read Beech-Nuts book, Solid
Advice: A Guide to Feeding Your Baby. On page 6 they actually
print the following alert in the margin: "ALERT: Gluten -- a protein
found in some cereals such as wheat -- is responsible for a serious
intestinal disease called 'celiac disease'. Wait until the baby is at
least 8 months old before feeding foods made with wheat (bread,
regular pasta, and somemixed cereals)."

It would have been nice if they had added oats, barley and rye but
at least it's a good first step and they should be congratulated.

Regards,
Lani K. Thompson
