Hello,

I know of an elementary school aged boy who has been diagnosed with bipolar
disorder and ADHD over the last few years. He has occasional violent
outbursts and has been suspended from school a few times. He is very thin
and has never been a good eater, but is average height and otherwise appears
healthy. Beyond this, I know of no health problems, or any reason to
suspect CD.

His doctors continue to treat the chemical imbalances they have discovered,
but they have not investigated any cause of the imbalances. His parents are
frustrated and are convinced there is some treatable cause for his mental
state.

I am trying to help this family stimulate their doctors to look deeper into
the overall health of this child, and find treatments for the cause, rather
than just the symptoms. I suggested to them that they investigate Celiac
Disease and other potential triggers for his mental condition, but the
doctors remain unconvinced there is any reason for such investigation. I am
hopeful the doctors will be so stimulated by similar case histories that
have resulted in successful diagnosis and treatment of the actual cause of a
mental disorder.

Do any of you have stories of behavioral problems, or diagnosed mental
illness, in children absent blatant gastrointestinal symptoms, that resulted
in a finding of Celiac Disease or other trigger? If so, the family can
hopefully use them to educate their doctors. I have an article from the
May/June 1998 Spruenik Press that is right along this line, but more case
studies can only help.

Thank you.
