I am not a physician but I thought that the NYT article might unduly alarm
women with CD of childbearing age so I'm adding a few personal thoughts that
might add some perspective.

In putting forward the 350% increase in Autism for children of mothers with
CD, the article does not say whether the mothers were on a gluten-free diet
or not. But, since the antigen, gluten, causes the body to produce the
antibodies which cause inflammation, it would be reasonable to assume that
in the absence of the antigen, inflammation would be minimized. One more
reason why it is important to maintain a strict gluten-free diet.

For a woman of childbearing age, contemplating pregnancy, I think a
conversation with her physician about testing to ensure celiac antibodies
are low and strictly following a gluten-free diet would be appropriate.

Joel
