I had a surprising number of requests for my anti-bloating regimen. I think I want to present this in layers. The first two layers are foundations, and the actual recipe is built on top. Perhaps you don't need the foundation and can advance right to the top, but if not, the whole regimen is laid out.

First layer is the fat layer. The good fats vs. the bad fats. I find I can't digest hydrogenated fats, for example. But we need an amount of fat in our diet, because our brains and even cell walls are formed from lipids. We need the fat-handling vitamins: Vitamins A, D, and K. Vitamin K is supposed to be plentiful, and easily absorbed, but because it is a fat-soluble vitamin, celiacs are at risk for absorbing it. Not only is K used for clotting factor, but apparently it forms "fat packets" in the blood stream. I haven't figured out if that's a good thing or a bad thing, perhaps someone can elaborate on it.

The second layer is trace minerals. I have been an advocate of traces since I found that my overwhelming fatigue always responded to iron, or manganese, or even TwinLabs TriBoron Plus.

The best site I ever found to explain this is called "The New Approach to Low Thyroid" where the steps of transforming tyrosine to usuable thyroid are explained in terms of the trace minerals needed. The trace mins cited are:

Iron, manganese, zinc, iodine, selenium and potassium.

I find that I need to supplement every day. Anecodotally, I can eat red meat 8 times a week and cook in iron skillets and still be anemic enough to end up in my doctor's office complaining of fatigue (with normal thyroid test results of course) but this really works for me. As an afterthought, here is a link. Read both articles. http://www.health-truth.com/articles/thyroid.asp

That noted, here is what I found gets rid of bloat: Start here.

Phenylalanine (which is the amino acid precursor to tyrosine), zinc, manganese and molybdenum. Moly Bee aids in sulfation. Curiously, an increase in dental cavities seems to be linked to deficiency of molybdenum. For example, even with fluoride, my family is prone to developing cavities. Take at night.

Finally, I used to wake up every morning with no periherial vision in my eye. It was like looking down a cardboard tube. On really bad days, my eye felt so swollen and engorged that it felt like I had a stick poking into it. I got a couple of responses where women mentioned that they had the same experience. This is what Hilary wrote:

I also get what I call "eye cramps" - it feels like the eyeball is either twisting in a knot or shot through with a tiny arrow - it REALLY hurts, but fortunately does not usually last very long

I can definitely relate to the arrow in the eye analogy. That's what I call an ocular migraine. What I have found to largely avoid this is to take the following along with the zinc, phenylalanine, manganese and molybdenum:

Biotin 1000 (my health food store carries the KAL brand)
Lysine

That's what it takes for me.
