It is useful from time to time to review some administrative commands
that all the resources of the CELIAC list to be used to its fullest
potential. The complete set of commands and general List information
is available in the Welcome Message that is sent to each subscriber.
The Welcome Message is a "living" document, by which we mean it is
updated often. All but the newest subscribers may not be aware of
changes that have been made to the Welcome Message. (We post changes to
the list as informational messages, so you generally will see them in
that form.)

To obtain a fresh copy of the Welcome Message, send an e-mail message to
the admisntrative ID ([log in to unmask]). The body of the note
(not the Subject: field) should contain this command:

   GET CELIAC WELCOME CELIAC

Please, do NOT send commands to the List ID ([log in to unmask])

For everyone's benefit, we'll discuss the techniques for receiving
messages from the list.

The majority of subscribers receive their mail as individual messages
(MAIL) or as a group of messages (DIGEST).

This single message is an example of what is obtained by those who use
the MAIL option.

When an ID is configured for DIGEST, all individual messages are
combined into a single file and sent out at 11:00 pm each day. This
message format may be easier for some who desire to separate messages
between different sources (work, other Lists, etc.). For AOL
subscribers, digest is a cost saving feature.

A disdvantage of DIGEST is that replies must be sent out as NEW MESSAGES
with new subject headings.

To change your setting, send ONE (not both) of the following commands
to the administrative id ([log in to unmask]):

   SET CELIAC MAIL
   SET CELIAC DIGEST

The E-DIGEST is a special file designed for the busy professional, not
most celiacs. It is a message sent out around 8:00 am each day. It
contains a shortened version of the previous day's DIGEST with many
items not of interest to a professional removed. The subject headers
for all the posts in the regular DIGEST are retained in this file, with
"<deleted>" listed beside the ones that have been removed from the
DIGEST file.

Usenet access has been formally requested. Because the approval person
was out of the country for three weeks, we are waiting for him to find
time in his busy schedule to make the required system changes. Remember
that this is volunteer work and that his job takes first priority. When
access to BIT.LISTSERV.CELIAC is available, a follow-up message will be
posted.

For those not familiar with Usenet, it is a technique of obtaining
messages using a specialized mail reader to obtain the subject
headings. Then "marked" messages are retrieved for reading. A
different mail program may or may not be required, depending upon your
individual situation. To post to CELIAC as a Usener reader, you must
still be a subscriber to the CELIAC list; however you can use the NOMAIL
option to avoid having messages sent to you by the list.

On Tuesday a change will be made to the DIGEST. Currently, it is
produced at 11:00 p.m and contains all messages for the previous 24
hours. Starting Tuesday, there is a possibility of multiple DIGESTs
each day. Whenever the posts for a 24-hour period exceed 400 lines,
they will be split into multiple DIGEST files for that day. When the
400 line limit is reached, a DIGEST file is sent out immediately; then a
new DIGEST file is started containing any additional posts received
that day. This process is repeated each time the 400 line limit is
exceeded. Finally, at 11:00 pm the last DIGEST for the day is sent out.

This means that some days you will receive two DIGEST files. It is even
possible that you could receive three or more DIGEST files in a day, but
that is very unlikely.
