Hi All--

Sorry to be so slow getting this summary out. My
original question was, do or can reactions to gluten
ingestion change over time? For example, if prior to
diagnosis one experiences constipation, then after a
year or two on a gluten free diet, could one
experience diarrhea or other symptoms?

I received 51 affirmative responses. Some people only
replied, "Yes," and some replies were so similar to
others that I've just listed those that were
representative. I thank everyone for their time and
willingness to share for the education of me and
others who requested this summary.
_____
Yes! I have 3 celiac teenagers. We've been doing the
G.F. diet for about 8 years now. All react much more
severly now than before. I suspect it is because they
have many more miles of villi to launch a reaction and
as they developed celiac their villi wore down bit by
bit. We went from symptoms prior to diagnosis that
were nausea and abdomenal pain with mushy stools to
severe vomiting and diarrhea if anything with a
significant amount of gluten were accidentally eaten
(ie. a wheat waffle)
_____
In my own experience, I've had my reactions change. I
first started actually noticing and attributing my
constipation and strange aches to gluten about a year
ago. I went on the gluten free diet then. After
getting most of the gluten out of my system, when I
made a mistake, the constipation changed to diaherra
within three months.
_____
Not only can the reactions change, you might notice
ways you react that you never noticed before - just
lived with and assumed were normal. I have found that
my reactions have gotten worse and the quantity that
sets me off has gotten less - I now assume that 1
molecule will do me in.
_____
I had terrible cramps, gas pains, diarrhea, undigested
food from leaky gut for many years, It went on and on
because I was not diagnosed quickly. Now I find that
when I have a gluten accident, I get bad gas pains,
putrid gas, but no diarrhea. I go from constipation to
loose movements. It is more of an emptying out kind of
thing. So, yes, I have had changes since going gluten
free. I can feel crappy for a week or more before I
get back to myself.
_____
I used to have gas and terrible diaharea. Now i think
i am getting attacks of the glooms... but i am not
sure its the gluten. it only happnes when I eat out
and I am not as picky as I should be about making my
needs known.
_____
Before my diagnosis I was pretty much asymptomatic in
a digestive way, But now if I eat something wrong by
accident I get the full digestive response -- gas,
bloating, diarrhea, and the whole works.
_____
I had NO reaction to gluten prior to dx - was severely
anemic. Now...after 1 1/2 years - I get terrible
stomach cramps and horrendous diarrhea.
_____
The longer one goes without gluten, your body becomes
more sensitive to gluten.
_____
I have only been on the Gluten Free diet since Nov
03... but very soon on the diet I noticed that I
responded differently than I had before the diet...
I had different symptoms... instead of the diahrrea,
nausea and not feeling hungry, I felt overly bloated
(never felt like that before)and a couple of stomach
pains (never had ANY pain before)... and one thing
to add from my perspective, I became VERY aware of any
ache, pain or discomfort whether from accidentally
ingesting gluten or anything else.
_____
I have experienced this. Initially I experienced
diarrhea with so much as a crumb. After nearly 4 years
GF-- last week I had my first major "accident"--I had
NO diarrhea but I did have abdominal pain and
distention.
_____
I think a lot of people experience changes in their
reactions over time. For myself and my adult children
(all diagnosed 8 yrs. ago) these reactions have
included developing reactions to other foods, like
distilled white vinegar, which have, apparently,
nothing whatsoever to do with gluten, but which
trigger identical reactions. We find we get more
frequent mouth sores than bloating. Mostly, it is very
confusing.
_____
no symptoms prior to diagnosis/gluten free;
diarrhea and stomach upset after going gluten free
_____
I have been a celiac for 14 years. When I was
diagnosed I had diahhrea and maybe some constipation.
Now when I have injested a little gluten,by accident,
I have constipation.

Hope this summary is helpful for those who wonder what
in the world is going on with their bodies!

Cheers,
Ayn in Alabama
