I suggested several weeks ago that support groups could check their local libraries, and ask the library to order books about celiac disease or the gluten-free diet that they don't already own. I got many positive responses. Several people asked for a list of books. Not all books are created equal, so I would leave it to your judgment to pick the ones that are most needed. The national support groups often review books in their newsletters, and we see ads on this listserv. You can also search Amazon.com for "gluten" or "celiac disease" for ideas. When I did this I found that there are a lot more gluten-free cookbooks than I realized!

I can recommend two books. One is "Autoimmune Diseases and their Environmental Triggers" by Elaine Moore. By reading this I've recognized other autoimmune conditions in my family (I had no idea that rheumatic fever was an autoimmune reaction). This book has a tremendous amount of information, which as far as I can tell is accurate. Another book that I like for its description of celiac disease is "Mayo Clinic on Digestive Health".

Two people, including a librarian on the list, suggested donating books as a help to the library. They also mentioned that if a support group donates a book, then there can be a "donated by" nameplate in the book that will make readers aware of the support group. These comments are included below.

As a librarian, I applaud your efforts to encourage librarian awareness of
celiac disease and to encourage library use in general.

I respectfully suggest that CD support groups (or individuals) chip in and
*donate* copies of CD books to libraries. Library book budgets are usually
inadequate and in tough economic times such as these, many book budgets
have been reduced. Not every title that is requested for purchase, can be
purchased. By donating copies of CD books and materials to your local
library, you support CD awareness *and* your library at the same time.

BTW, when donating items to the library, contact the collection development
librarian directly to ensure that the right person receives and reviews the
donated materials. Additionally, your library may be willing to include a
"donated by" nameplate in the book recognizing your CD support group's
donations.

Another idea is for the celiac support group to use their funds to
purchase a book(s) for the library. Other organizations I have been
involved with have done this as outreach since the support group's
information can be placed in the front cover as the dedication. Not
only would newly diagnosed individuals have access to a book but also
become aware of the local support group.
