I am having a cat scan done and was given a jug of barium sulfate
suspension to drink before the test. I asked what the ingredients were and
the technician had no idea and nothing available in the department.
However there was an 800 number on the bottle and I called. Got a
knowledgeable person who knew what celiac disease is and said, "Do not
take this." He recommended another barium mixture. The name of the barium
mixture with wheat in it is: Readi-Cat #729. The different barium sol. was
not available at my hospital, so I have to take a different contrast
medium. It is all arranged, but I am still in shock that the hospital is
so ignorant of this disease. We even have a celiac support group that
meets at the hospital once a month!
