These are from my notes of this study:
Picarelli A, et al, 2002. Antiendomysial antibody
detection in fecal supernatants: In vivo proof that small bowel mucosa is
the site of antiendomysial antibody production, Amer J Gastroenterol 97:
95-8.

1. Twenty-one untreated celiac patients with intestinal damage characterized
by villous atrophy tested positive to EmA in their processed stool media,
cultured duodenal biopsies, and blood.
However, none of the treated CD patients with normal intestinal biopsies had
detectable EmAs. But, all 10 treated celiac patients tested positive for
EmA in their cultured biopsies challenged with gliadin for 48 hours. Also,
none of the control patients were positive for EmA even upon gliadin
challenge of their cultured biopsies.
2. This study demonstated that the intestinal lining is the site of EmA
production in celiac patients. It also demonstrated that gliadin specific
antibodies are found in the processed stool media of untreated celiac
patients and are indicators of intestinal immune activation.
