This is an interesting study though probably not large enough to be statistically significant.

Some people might also draw rather different conclusions from it:

Surely the most interesting result was surely is HOW MANY had CD, even the controls:

    2 out of 50 with IBS (4%)

    2 out of 24 with dyspepsia (6%)

    2 of the 78 controls (2.6%)

Rochester is a veritable celiac hotspot!

The findings do not necessarily contradict previous IBS/CD studies which looked at hospital outpatients who, by definition, are likely to have symptoms more severe and prolonged than a self-selecting, self-diagnosed group of the general public. Also, many earlier trials concluding the incidence of CD was much higher in IBS patients were done before more recent epidemiological studies showed how high the incidence is in general populations (between .8% and 1.3% - this study suggests 2 -3%).

A one in 20 diagnosis of CD in patients with IBS/dyspepsia is consistent with other studies. It's still high and suggests testing for CD should be routinely included for these patients. No one has ever suggested all or even most IBS patients have CD.

It also does not change the fact that an extraordinarily high number of people with confirmed IBS feel better on a diet excluding certain foods, especially gluten.

Charlotte, Oxford, UK
