A friend needs advice for reducing the unpleasant side effects of a short term (4 week) pre-biopsy gluten challenge for a 15 year boy, (negative serology but highly suggestive symptoms). He appears to react quickly and classically to small amounts of gluten (gut ache, diarrohea, tiredness, irritability) and although his recent diet has been low gluten rather than strictly gluten-free, he and his family are naturally worried by how he (and they) will cope. They are particularly anxious he stays as well as possible for important school exams coming up.
Specific experience on any of the following would be helpful: eg:
Have types of gluten (eg bread or pasta) had a worse effect?
Take gluten only at one time of day or throughout day in smaller amounts?
Best time of day to take gluten (evening to sleep it off?) Eat at end of meal rather than on a empty stomach?
Any other non-gluten foods help? Energy boosting foods? Eat little and often? Lots of fluids? Which ones?
Any prophylactic foods or medication before eating? eg Probiotics (non-prescription)?
Which (preferably over the counter) medications ( I can find UK equivalents) to help with nausea/pain /diarrohea./ sleeping at night?
Have any supplements helped (?iron) with, for example increased tiredness?
NB I am ONLY looking for practical advice from others' experiences to help this family through the next difficult month, NOT correspondence re merits or otherwise of gluten challenges...
