I was once the poster of what I thought was a legitimate question.
Unfortunately, a made a related comment that was not intended to be
judgmental or harmful, but ended up evoking a great deal of agitation and
cross-fire.  Although I was able in the end to get a pretty good answer to
the question, I felt foolish for having ever made the post in the first
place.  I concluded that there is a basic problem with e-mail; it does not
convey tone of voice or expression, leaving open the possibility of
misinterpretation.  Can we all just start with the premise that when
someone posts to the list, the person is doing so in good faith and
without the intent of hurting anyone?  And if we find a post hurtfull, can
we just assume that it was not intentional?
