I originally sent this summary two days ago and it has yet to show up in one
of the digests I've received so I'm posting it again

Thank you to everyone who responded to my post. I received some wonderful
suggestions which I will list below with my comments. We met my niece at
the Charleston Visitor and Convention Center and decided to check out the
recommendations closest to the center and keep going until we found
something to our liking.

Jestine's at 251 Meeting Street - There was a line outside and a menu posted
in the window. The salads looked interesting and the prices were reasonable
but the main courses all were fried/breaded and just did not appeal to the
adults in our group. It seems like a good place for someone who likes
traditional southern cooking.

Pinckney's Cafe at 18 Pinckney Street - Now Cru Cafe, we had to go inside to
see the menu which had some very appealing items. The salads ranged in price
from $ 7.95 and up and sounded interesting. The main dishes were a
combination of fried, baked, broiled and ranged in price from about $ 10.95
up to $19.95. They had a flourless chocolate cake on the menu that sounded
as good as The Outback's flourless chocolate brownie. The atmosphere was
light and airy, but a bit 'busy' and there was a waiting list. The adults
would have been content trying the food there but the children vetoed that
choice. Both children said it was too crowded and noisy!

AW Shucks at 35 Market Street - What a gem! Although I had traveled to
Charleston for years and years on business I had never eaten there. What a
pity! They have everything, traditional Southern foods, great salads,
broiled/baked foods, burgers, salads etc. Our waiter Nathan was very helpful
and everyone got something they enjoyed. My niece had a burger and fries, I
had traditional gumbo, my celiac 7 year old had a hot dog/no bun, grits and
a side salad; my other 7 year old had chicken fingers, fries and a side
salad. The hit of the meal was the dessert, root beer floats.

Other recommendations were:

Hyman's at 213 Meeting Street - This is where I almost always ate during the
seven years business took me to Charleston. My business partners had
numerous dietary issues and the staff there was always extremely helpful. It
is definitely a seafood lovers paradise. My children and I plan to check it
out on our next trip. They do have a waiting list/line during peak hours.

Saffron at 331 E. Bay Street - This is a must check out for us.

Noisy Oyster on the corner of Market and East Bay Street

High Cotton at 199 E. Bay Street - Was told this is expensive but
knowledgeable staff and excellent food.

Chain restaurants recommended were: California Dreaming, Appleby's, Texas
Steer, Texas Roadhouse, and The Outback Steak House.

Whole Foods health food store across the new bridge in Mt Pleasant was
recommended by a number of people.

Two websites were recommended www.goodhealth.com which sells a book of
restaurants that have GF menus and Charlie in N. Charleston recommended the
Charleston Celiac Group's website www.charlestonceliacs.org. They having a
GF dining card on their site that is by far the best I've seen. I have
printed a copy and will be using it in the future.

Once again thank you to everyone for their suggestions/input. I hope this
information will be useful to others.

Gail in Lexington, SC
