Hi Listmates,

More info to team up with Dawn Pilney's good summaries on dental fillings.

The Organic Consumer's Association free online newsletter just posted an interesting article written by a UK Environmental Editor (The Independent) on the FDA's position on dental amalgam fillings. However there is no link to the actual FDA statement so maybe this should be just a heads up and we can keep our eyes peeled for more documentation.

Here is the link to the OCA blurb which includes a link to the actual full article. There are a number of really helpful testimonies and comments by readers posted after the blurb that include contact info for biological dentists, Mexico contacts, etc.

http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_13252.cfm

Additionally, here is a collection of info snippets I've found in my investigations.

Heavy metal exposure is considered a major contributor to toxic overload and chemical injury leading to leaky gut syndrome and subsequently THE GLUTEN SYNDROME and similar food intolerances, as shown in the medical diagrams presented by Dr. Aristo Vojdani, Immunosciences Laboratories (a research lab). www.theglutensyndrome.net/VojdaniDiagrams.htm

In my investigations I've found many other researchers and practitioners who agree with this viewpoint. They also include toxin damage to skin, lung and blood brain barriers as well as to the gut wall/leaky gut.

FYI, there is also an opinion that heavy metals are often behind chronic fungus infections and tooth decay. Furthermore it is believed that consumption of liberal amounts of fats, particularly preferably raw butterfat, cream, naturally raised grass fed animal fat and unprocessed tropical oils such as organic virgin coconut oil and fresh coconut cream, unhydrogenated palm oil and some cold pressed organic olive oil (NOT processed seed oils such as corn, cotton, canola and soy, hydrogenated fats/transfats. etc) contribute to "safer" amalgam removal. These opinions are held by practitioners and patients who experience generally high recovery rates. The reasoning is that fats attract and store toxins to remove them from circulation. This reduces further damage to more crucial organs and tissues. These fats also support the liver and other elimination organs as they remove heavy metals and toxins from the body. One practitioner with a high success rate actually has many patients
consume these fats and other raw food for a couple of years before amalgam removal. He also instructs his patients to gain weight during this time (on a prescribed "healthy" regime) in order to provide extra fat tissue to bind and store these toxins as they are dislodged in the body. This to a degree protects the brain, bone marrow, sensitive organs and neurological tissues from further toxin damage. He claims this smooths the experience for the patient and keeps them calmer emotionally. After a period of time, he gives the patients a weight loss regime and the fats and toxins bound to them are more safely processed through the elimination organs and removed from the body.

These are interesting but sometimes shocking opinions I have run across. I personally know desperately ill persons (including a friend) who recovered using general principles that incorporate raw saturated fats and other foods. For more info on this movement back to natural saturated fats, and cholesterol concerns connected with processed grain oils, see www.westonaprice.org and the following articles in particular http://www.westonaprice.org/traditional_di...ary_wisdom.html , http://westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/index.html
http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/oiling.html

I see a general trend of respect and yet understandable confusion re the "raw" movement, particularly if raw animal products are included. Some of these ideas are in line with a theory called the "cellular" theory. It was developed and debated in the 1800s for 50 years by Antoine Bechamp and others, opposite Louis Pasteur's "germ theory", and has different rules. It has not been well researched, but some of the societal predictions made by cellular theory proponents have come true and often the cellular principles produce eye popping recoveries. Many thanks to all who replied. Here’s a summary of the replies I got regarding dental fillings.

--I checked with our dentist and the white composite filling they use is Dentsply Esthet-X.. I called the manufacturer's professional line 800# just now and they
said yes they know what celiac is, one of the employees in their office is a diagnosed celiac, and there is no gluten in their composite fillings.

--My dentist uses Ivoclar Empress (pressed ceramic system). I was assured by Ivocar, a very large intl company, that the product was gluten free...they ran some checks
with their technical people, their lawyers (of all things) and finally sent me a list of the ingredients.

--We haven't had problems with any numbing creams or injections. What I did have trouble with was my former dentist's x-rays. She put one film in for every tooth. I'm chemically sensitive anyway, and that made me horribly ill.

--My daughter and I have both gotten the composite type fillings without any problems. I haven't found a single product yet that the dentist uses that has gluten in it.

--Try and go to a mercury-free dentist, and make sure to get the acryllic fillings. My dentist checked out all the ingredients for me, and I have had all mercury amalgams removed years ago.

--My children & I have successfully used 3M composite fillings.

--There is an opinion and practice that patients should be tested for compatibility to their dental materials. Does anyone have any more info on this? Also there is an association, DAMS, (google it) that is dedicated to helping folks with these issues. I had them send me a packet of info. I'm sure there are other organizations as well.

----I (the summarizer) also called 3M myself and they verified that they put no gluten containing ingredients in their composite fillings. However, my dental office does not recommend standard composites for back teeth because they say they don’t stay in place well over time. When I emphasized my strong position of avoiding the mercury containing amalgams, she said she would look into using some new products they have available. They settled on a plan to use Quixx by the company Dentsply, which she said is kind of like a composite because it is tooth colored and light curable but is packable like an amalgam and stronger than a resin. It is gluten free and mercury free. Also, the topical numbing product, the pain shot, and the prep are all gluten free.

I plan to write down all the product & manufacturer names for items tomorrow when I bring my son for his appointment, but I wanted to get this summary out ASAP because a number of other people requested a summary as they need dental work done soon too. I will post a follow-up.
