Hi all,

Has anyone ever heard of a celiac having an anaphylactic reaction to
ingesting gluten?

Over the weekend I had an episode about 20-30 minutes after eating a meal
in a restaurant where I blacked out and fainted multiple times. At the
time I was having every single symptom of anaphylaxis that I see on most
descriptions (swollen tongue, itchy skin / mouth, shallow breathing, hot,
clammy skin, red face, gastrointestinal cramping and bloating, nausea).

I have never had this type of reaction before in my life, and I've also
never fainted before. I spent the weekend in the hospital and their
diagnosis was inconclusive, they think it was probably just dehydration but
possibly an allergic reaction. The part that doesn't add up for me is all
of the allergic-type symptoms that wouldn't be explained by just
dehydration.

I think the reasons they were reluctant to think it was an allergic
reaction were because this has never happened to me before, and also
because it had been 20-30 minutes after I ate (they said a typical allergic
reaction starts much quicker, like within 5 minutes).

I'm pretty sure that what I ate was gluten-free but let's say, in theory,
that the restaurant had accidentally given me regular toast instead of
gluten-free toast and I somehow didn't notice. That would have been the
largest amount of gluten I'd eaten since my diagnosis. Is it possible that
my body would have an anaphylactic reaction to this?

Background:

I was diagnosed with Celiac about 7 years ago, and have followed a
gluten-free diet ever since. I'm pretty sure that I have had Celiac my
whole life, as I had all the chronic, classic symptoms from the time I was
a child (regular stomach aches, bloating, anemia and other vitamin
deficiencies, etc).

Since diagnosis, my typical reaction to accidental gluten ingestion is a
stomach ache and bloating that start a couple of hours later, and
tiredness/weakness and brain fog that linger for 1-2 weeks after. Like I
said, I've never had an anaphylactic type reaction to anything before. But
all of my accidental gluten ingestions have been a very small amount.

Thanks in advance for any insights! I will summarize.

Janie
