I've been GF for two years now - and I two still have
ridges in my nails (that I've had forever!) I'm not
sure what can be done about that. I was hoping GF
diet would make my nails stronger and no ridges - but
it hasn't happened yet (unless it will take more
time). However, my thought is it may not be a
"Celiac" issue - having the ridges ...just a heredity
thing?

I have the same kind of fingernails. They have remained this way in
spite of being GF for three years and having my hypothyroid condition
corrected. I am like you in that I'm always border line anemic. I guess
that's the catch. But, no matter what I do, the anemia never resolves. .

My doctor told me that it takes up to a year in order for fingernails to get
back to normal. So even though your blood shows that you no longer have anemia
it takes much longer for fingernails to recover.

My fingernails were ridged, splitting and weak for years before the cd
diagnosis. I was heavily on calcium, mag., D, and when I went gf, my nails did
improve. However, if I
get hidden gluten enough to get sick again, the nails will be bad for months.
Now, after almost 3 yrs. gf, my nails are amazing. But it has taken that
long. Also, do you know if your ferritin is up to normal levels? Ferritin is the
stored iron, and if it is low, you are still anemic. It took 2 years for my
ferritin to reach 47, at which time I began to feel much more solid, and my
fingernails do a bit more consistently better. I was at 7 when I went gf, and the
optimum is 100.

I have been gluten free for about 18 months now, and I have just recently
(within the past 2 months) begun to notice changes and improvements. I was
surprised and disappointed at first because my doctor led me to believe that
all of my health problems would go away after a couple of weeks on the diet.
My anemia, low weight, and excruciating headaches still continue, but are
beginning to improve. I have gained almost 5 pounds and I have enough
energy to exercise.

I have come to the conclusion that I either was not following the diet as
strictly as I thought I was, or my body has just taken longer to heal. In
either case, I am glad I have remained strictly gf, it was worth the longer
than expected wait for results.

Take 2-3 MSM tablets a day. Wonder Labs (as well as others) have gluten
free MSM (most of their products are). Not only will you see a difference
in your fingernails (for the better) after about 8 months, the MSM will help
you build healthy tissue more quickly in your whole body.

There are very kind & knowledgeable people there, among them doctors, to
answer your questions.
There also is a GF product list, updated regularly.
Also, I have voluntarily posted many hundreds of GF recipes.
