I was diagnosed with celiac disease 18 months ago and have followed the
diet strictly ever since. Last Sunday we went shopping and decided to have
supper out before going home. A new Mexican restaurant had just opened in
the mall, so being I've eaten at other Mexican restaurants and had no
reactions, I thought I'd be safe. WRONG!!! I asked the server all
the "normal" questions in regard to gluten-free ingredients and she assured
me the tacos were in corn shells, the rice had only onion, tomato and
peppers in it and the beans were just that. About half way through my meal
I developed a headache and became congested. I stopped eating and we headed
home. By the time we got home, I started having major acid reflux. I went
between the sweats and the chills, then felt like I was having a heart
attack! My husband wanted to take me to the emergency room, but I felt they
wouldn't know what to do, and was more afraid they'd try giving me pain
killers with gluten. I didn't sleep until about 5:00 A.M. It took all the
next day for the feeling of being hit by a truck to leave and the last
thing to go away was the intense headache. During the hours, all I took was
Tums, which did absolutely nothing. I've learned a lesson and will not take
any chances ever again. My question is...is there anyting I could have
taken to help during those hours or did I have to let the gluten work its
way out on its own? My husband wanted me to try throwing up, thinking if I
got rid of the remains of gluten it would stop. Any suggestions??
