Hi List Members,

My husband and I recently discovered the Celiac condition and the diet has
improved his health more than we would have ever dreamed. He, over the past
8 years (after a car accident) has developed all the classic symptoms of
Celiac Disease and after going to Doctors time and time again was prescribed
everything from anti-fungal cream (he had DH) on his feet to eating more
bran muffins ( for his gastrointestinal problems...none of this worked,
obviously). After switching Dr's, the new Dr. off-handedly said, why don't
you try giving up wheat; some people have an *allergy* to wheat...this
helped but there were still symptoms that concerned us. A friend of a friend
pointed us to the possibility of CD and so since nothing else ever worked we
learned about the diet through Internet Resources and it has done wonders.
He is now symptom free with no professional diagnosis. His Dr. still refers
to CD as an allergy...

We have an 8 year old daughter, who occasionally breaks out in hives and
will also get skin rashes (that do not look like hives nor the DH that my
husband had) and says that it feels as if her skin is crawling. After all
the reading I have done I am considering the possibility of her having the
condition as well. She complains of stomach pains some times, complains of
muscle and bone aches, will sometimes complain that her arm feels like it is
falling asleep, has two unexplainable marks on her face (I thought they were
pimples when they first appeared, but have yet to go away). And also she has
white chalky appearances on her teeth. (other things I have noticed about
her this year are, she is always tired, and tired looking, and can be quite
irritable.)

Her orthodontist pointed out to me after I asked him about her teeth that
yes, he did see some abnormality in the way her adult teeth have formed (the
part that would have developed in the age range of 1years-3years, however
there is a definite line on her teeth where this chalky appearance stops as
the teeth have matured and continued to develop) He also said that they
have an abnormal yellow hue (besides the whitish parts) and that when he
went to the university (that he teaches at) he would look up some things for
me.)

Her pediatrician, wanted to dismiss me right away and said that she looks as
if she is thriving and that with CD the symptoms are gastrointestinal. I
replied that those were the classic symptoms but have read that they can
vary much more than that. He referred me to a pediatric GI, but I wanted to
talk to list members in this area and go right for a DR that I am sure will
know about this condition and all it's various symptoms.

Thanks in advance,

Allyson L. Clagett
