Hello All,

Thanks to all who replied to my inquiry on gluten free canned tuna fish. In
particular, I questioned the vegetable broth which is present in so many
brands of tuna. In this regard, I received a very helpful response from Bev
in Milwaukee. She states, "The US Dept. of Agriculture is in charge of meat &
fish products & regulates labeling of those. They have a specific list of
vegetables that can be used in vegetable broth and wheat/gluten-containing
grains is not on that list." The following is from the Chicken of the Sea
website under FAQs:

Q. What does the vegetable broth consist of ....?

A. Vegetable broth, which is added to most canned tuna products as a flavor
enhancer, is described in FDA regulations and must consist of two or more of
the following vegetables: beans, cabbage, carrots, celery, garlic, onions,
parsley, peas, potatoes, green bell peppers, red bell peppers, spinach and
tomatoes.

Still, a few who responded did not eat tuna which contained vegetable broth.
They looked for tuna with nothing added except water.

Here is a summary of the brands which were recommended and the number of
individuals who purchased those brands:
Starkist (8)
Chicken of the Sea (3)
Bumble Bee (3)

One person recommended each of the following:
Whole Foods Tongol Tuna
Safeway
Shoprite
Trader Joes
Kroger
Progresso (in oil)
Kirkland - Costco (no vegetable broth)
Seasons (no vegetable broth)

In addition, Starkist makes a low sodium, chuck light tuna which contains
only light tuna and water. This information came from Sue in Michigan.

Thanks again for all the responses.

Roselyn
