I'm reading a book called "The Teammates" about four Red Sox
teammates from the 30s and 40s. Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Bobby
Doerr, and John Pesky. Early in the book the author is describing how
they remained friends after ball and worried about each other through
various health problems.

"When Pesky, about 20 years ago, began to lose weight at a
frightening rate, they were all very nervous. Ted was sure Pesky had
cancer ... Pesky himself was afraid that he had some form of cancer
by this point. His weight, around 170 pounds in his playing days, had
dropped alarmingly, and he was below 130 when the doctors finally
discovered the cause: He had become allergic to wheat. "Perfect for
someone of Croatian origin--that's all we eat," he noted."

Sounds like CD, not a wheat "allergy," but what the heck. As I
started reading this passage I said to myself, "I wonder if they
tested him for celiac."
