Thank you for all your responses (approx30). My dau. couldn't believe how
helpful everyone was with their knowledge, hands on experience and
suggestions.

Numerous moms suggested breast feeding as long as possible.

Many suggested keeping the baby away from wheat/gluten as long as possible,
even up to 4 yrs, in hopes of avoiding a problem. With all the foods
available,(veggies, fruits, rice based products) it shouldn't be to hard.

Cheryl said: "she nursed both of her sons and they both have celiac. I
also know another mother who nursed her 3 girls for over a year, she
doesn't have celiac, but her husband does and all 3 girls have celiac. She
doesn't think there is anyway to predict. Dr. Fasano who is the leading
expert in cel
iac, said to give the babies wheat. If any symptoms appear,
they would know what it was and if no problems resulted, the baby should be
tested around 7 yrs old. Delaying wheat is only postponing the inevitable,
but no guarantee to ward off celiac."

Several people also said: they don't think that avoiding wheat for the
first year has anything to do with developing celiac disease. Celiac
disease is genetic and either you have the gene or you don't.

I believe my dau.is going to try and keep him gluten/wheat free as long as
possible, and hope he does not have grandma's gene. I also believe because
it is genetic, if he has it, he has it, nothing we can do. Grandma will
have to do more baking and mom will have to learn to cook all over again.

We want to thank you all again for your kind responses and help. This
website has been a "God send" and don't know what I would do without it.
I
t has given me lots of knowledge, recipes and in touch with kind people
who are willing to help other people. If anyone would like a copy of all
the responses, let me know. Thanks again.....
