The consensus on Green drinks (nutritional supplemnets made from
grain grasses harvested before the gluten-containing seeds form) is
that they are safe. These powders are super-foods containing massive
amounts of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals. However, I
personally called Barleygreen and made them guarantee me it was GF.
They said they would not "guarantee it because it's "minutely
possible that unharvested grains could get in the mix".

I called the head research guy at Green Magma (Dr. Bob). He pretty
much guaranteed the product is GF however their other product, Magma
Plus may have a small amount of gluten. He said it would not be
possible for gluten to get in Green Magma because the grass is
harvested three weeks after the seed is planted and before the top
three inches of the grass grows.

I called Perfect Food and they e-mailed me that their product is 100%
GF, stating the grains from grasses have been pre-digested thru
beneficial bacteria to neutralize any allergens inherent in the food.

Here are the responses. Also a letter from Barleygreen.

Only the young green leaves can be used as this gives the
maximum nutrition. It has the most nutrients, amino acids, trace
minerals and live enzymes than over 300 green plants that were
researched by the chemist

>>Professor Hagiwara in Japan.

I am a Celiac, as are my 3 grown-up children. I take Barley
Green every day. I have absolutely no problems with it.

I received this e-mail from Barleygreen:

Gluten is a protein that is found in mature cereal grains or kernels.
Barleygreen is made with the juice of young barley grass shoots (about
8"-14" in height) harvested before the kernel is formed. Therefore, we
believe there is no gluten in the juice extract from barley leaves.

Another ingredient in Barleygreen, maltodextrin, is a carbohydrate made from
corn starch. Our manufacturer uses a low unit number of maltodextrin to
ensure ideal encapsulation and no gluten contamination. The brown rice in
Barleygreen is an extract (not a solid) so it is gluten-free as well. The
last ingredient in Barleygreen, kelp, is a natural source of iodine
containing numerous other minerals.

This is the information AIM gave us to help answer your questions. The FDA
will not allow AIM to put on the bottle that Barleygreen is totally gluten
free. They have very strict regulations but, I think the above information
proves that there is no gluten is Barleygreen. Please let us know if we can
further assist you.

Wishing you the best in good health,

I got one negative response:

***********

Hi. I'm not a scientist, but I've tried several brands of green grasses
without success. They did not cause the same brain problems with eating
wheat itself, but each still caused malabsorption problems in the gut, with
resulting leg and foot cramps. So, maybe it's just an "allergy" problem,
but the grasses did not work for me.
