In the Food Notes section of today's NY Times there is a report of an
American vodka made from Idaho potatos, called TETON GLACIER VODKA, 80
proof. Not cheap; depending on the shop a 750 milliliter decanter ranges
from $22 (Park Avenue Liquor Shop) to $16.99 (Grand Wine&Liquors in Long
Island City). According to the article, it is a "clean-tasting
vodka. Even when not stored in the freezer, a subtle hint of viscosity
rounds it off in the palate." For those who miss single malt scotch
and single cask bourbons, this could serve as a pre-prandial
-- or even post-prandial -- consolation.
