Wow - I am so grateful for this community.   I think I sent out my 
question about 3 hours ago.   I have received over 50 responses!  Thank you!

The advice has been:

- call the caterer/hotel and work with them ahead of time
- ask the bride and groom to work out the food, which can be risky
- regardless of what I do, bring a snack
- bring a meal/alternative for the cake
- eat ahead of time and enjoy the drinks

I have called the church, the reception is to be held in the basement.   
After some reluctance from the church receptionist, I gently insisted to 
be put through to the caterer's voicemail.   Sheesh.    I am so 
appreciative of all of your encouragement!   Thank you!
