I am not as severely gluten-intolerant as most of you, so take this
with a large grain of salt: as long as I take my own bottle of
wheat-free tamari (I like San-J light, available in health food stores),
I have eaten safely at sushi bars all over the country. Of course, I
avoid any battered-and-fried or tempurad dishes. (Since I'm one of
those perverts who likes ama ebi, I ask for the shrimp heads fried
without batter).

Favorite sushi bar in San Diego, hands down: Katzra, in Kearney Mesa,
on Convoy south of Balboa. Especially Weds-Sat when Yasu is working
(tell him that "an-door-REE-yah" sent you!). His philly rolls and
salmon skin handrolls are the best, and his sunamuno is wonderful (not
with a sweet dressing like most places, but with a refreshing dressing
something like a lemon vinaigrette!.
