Much has been written on the question of whether pure oats in particular
and commercial oats in practice are safe for celiacs. The conclusion for
adults seems to be yes and (but) no due to likely contamination somewhere
between the field and the dish.

In general the larger the size of a grain product, the easier it is to see
contamination and the easier it is for the suppliers to separate them.

Yearning for a bowl of hot oatmeal this coming winter, I was surprised to
find an oat grits product both from Arrowhead and from Shiloh. This "grit"
particle is very large: perhaps the length of the diameter of a split pea
and perhaps a quarter that in cylindrical diameter. .75 x 3 mm or so I'd
judge without a ruler in hand. There was unhulled barley in this store of
similar size, but I thought the potential contamination problem with oats
was with wheat. Wheat is much smaller, judging by statements from corn
suppliers about the ease of delivering a wheat free product.

Can someone confirm that wheat is the likely oats contaminant and that
size difference? I recall a natural crop rotation with wheat.

I'll contact Arrowhead as I've dealt with Quality Control there before.
Their oats comes from the supplier of their corn so they're otherwise
gluten free.

Can someone track down the corresponding Shiloh situation?

Oatmeal yearning....
