There were only 4 responses re:Hillshire Ham.
One warned to avoid all hams with glaze as they contain wheat
One stated the CSA Guide confirmed Hillshire Hams safe
One stated the company confirmed the hams as safe
Only one respondant stated that her son had had "stomach problems" but
had also eaten candy (also confirmed as safe) at the same time. They were
unsure which caused his reaction.

I posted because of our recent experience. Hillshire Farm Hams were listed as
"gluten free" in my TCCSSG Shopping Guide for l998. I also called the company
and they confirmed this information was current. I purchased one and served
it for Easter. I was somewhat skeptical and bypassed the one flavored with
brown sugar and bought the plain one instead.

Nine people ate the ham and four were ill with cramps and diarrhea within 2
hours. Strangely, two of us are celiacs, the third person was endoscoped this
week for her suspiciously "celiac symptoms" and the forth also has symptoms
but does not yet wish to know if she is celiac. We are all 1st degree
relatives.

Of the 5 people who had no complaints, none are celiac and none have any
reason to believe they might be. All this seemed very strange to us. There
was nothing else served that we had not all eaten before and the entire meal
was very plain and simple (potatoes and vegetables--GF bread).
My daughter was the only one affected who was willing to try again....the
next day she ate the ham for a second time and had diarrhea within 30 minutes.
(She had been the one who was the quickest to have diarrhea the day before).

Other family members continued to finish the ham with no ill effects. That
convinced us that it was the ham that had made some of us sick, but this was
very fast for a celiac reaction. Of the four of us affected, the 7-year old
child was the least "ill".

We all agreed, the ham was delicious, but not worth getting sick for.
I was curious to see if anyone else had experienced any problems---but it does
not seem that this was so.

Thank you to those who responded.
