Wow, a lot of input, thanks so much! Unfortunately, the news is confusing and apparently, my question controversial. The bottom line--the general consensus is that the annatto seed itself is GF but a common allergen so we have to watch for our own reactions. (This isn't good news for those who don't react violently, I suppose)

Here's the rundown:
10--said it's GF
1--said it's questionable but can't remember why
1--said the color additive annatto extract is not GF because it has alchohol in it.
2--said they have a bad reaction
many--said annatto is in many, many foods, including butter.
many more--encouraged me to go forth and enjoy my cheese.

Then on the Delphiforums site, also a great place for info, a controversy ensued. (Drama over annatto, go figure!) One person said that the GF seed is often fried in soybean oil and that many celiacs are sensitive to soy so it should be avoided or approached with caution. Others vigorously defended the safety of soy. Both "sides" stated that the other was spreading misinformation.

So that's the annatto update. As usual, it looks like we have to listen to our own bodies for the clearest information.

Best,
Toni
