The Listowners are proud to announce that in 13 short months, the
membership of the CELIAC list has reached the 1000 mark, with
subscribers from 23 countries:

Australia (25), Belgium (1), Canada (78), Finland (4), France (1),
Germany (17) Great Britain (27), Greece (1), Hungary (1), Ireland (1),
Israel (1), Italy (5), Mexico (1), Netherlands (4), New Zealand (4),
Norway (2), Portugal (1), Slovenia (1), Spain (3), Sweden (5),
Switzerland (3), USA (787).

In the past year, CELIAC has spawned three additional lists:
Cel-Kids for Celiac children and their parents
Cel-Gps for support group leaders (at Princeton's LISTPROC)
Cel-Pro for medical professionals (at Princeton's LISTPROC)

The next new feature planned is USENET access to the postings from
CELIAC.

The Usenet charter requires that an informal survey be conducted of your
opinions, both for and against the concept of establishing the presence
of CELIAC on the Usenet.

It is requested that those with a strong opinion for or against the
Usenet addition send a NEW message to Mike Jones ([log in to unmask]),
NOT to the whole CELIAC list. DO NOT REPLY to this message with survey
thoughts; send them to Mike. Mike will summarize the messages in a
later posting.

1. What is Usenet?
It is a bulletin board system in which articles on a variety of
topics are arranged in "newsgroups" and stored in a shared location
from which individual users can read them by suject headings.

2. Will there be any changes to the LISTSERV?
No. The CELIAC List will continue to operate in the same fashion. We
will just offer an additional method for reading the postings.

All the posters must be subscribed to CELIAC---you will not be able
to post from the newsgroup. This is being done to assure that all
posters receive the welcome message and learn about the special
   files.

3. How do I obtain Usenet access?
Contact your local provider and determine if Usenet is offered. When
the newsgroup access begins, it will be announced in a message to all
   subscribers of CELIAC.

4. Do I need any additional software?
Maybe. Some mail systems can also read messages from Usenet. Other
options include World Wide Web browsers (e.g. Netscape or Mosaic) and
programs devoted to newsnet access (e.g. NewsXpress).

5. Do have have to use Usenet?
No, the choice is yours. You can continue using CELIAC just as you
   do today.

6. Do I change anything on CELIAC, after subscribing to
   bit.listserv.celiac?
Yes. If you choose to read the postings from the bulletin board, you
can prevent the same messages from going to your mailbox. To do so,
send mail to: [log in to unmask] In the body of hte message
   write: SET CELIAC NOMAIL.

7. As a final reminder, please remember always to compose an accurate
subject line for your posts. Most newsreader programs group all
posts by "thread" (as determined by the subject line.) An inaccurate
subject line will group your post with others that may be completely
unrelated. People who may not be intersted in your subject would
therefore open it, and people who are interested might miss it!
