I hope someone hasn't already posted this. There was an article from North
Carolina that was released on the Associated Press today titled: "LIFE WITH
CELIAC DISEASE: A GUT-WRENCHING EXPERIENCE" by JIM SHAMP. Evidently there
is a daytime soap actress named Laura Sessums who recently found out that
she has celiac disease. Like many people she spent the better part of her
youth figuring it out. It seems that she was told by countless doctors that
her problem was emotional. The amazing thing is that "she became a
lawyer, refusing to accept any limitations implied by their labels. And the
many doctors who misdiagnosed her problems from the age of 7 until a mere
five years ago might be shocked to know Sessums is now, herself, a healthy
senior resident physician in the Duke University Department of Medicine.
Healthy, except for the fact that for the rest of her life she
won't be able to eat anything containing wheat, rye, barley or oats."

The article goes on to describe celiac disease as "an inherited disorder
found mainly among people of Celtic origin." Although the article is not
perfect, it does give more publicity to the problem. Until she was properly
diagnosed she was also misdiagnosed several times and given a variety of
drugs (and psychotherapy) to treat her. I thought it might be of interest
to members of the List.
