First of all, thanks to all those of you who provided such *specific*
information :) I am also happy to report that the food service office
at the university checked for me, and all their fruits, veggies, meats,
cheeses, and margarine are gf, so my husband will be able to get the
basics of every meal there.

Off campus, general consensus was that Los Angeles is a gold mine, but
there isn't much right close to campus.

There is a Ralph's and a Sav- on off of the Highway 1
(or PCH) south of Pepperdine.
Ralph's will have a gourmet section - a big deli and
a section for health foods, etc.

Malibu is quite isolated, but the best thing about it are the fish
shacks.
There are a number on PCH (Highway 1 along the coast) between LA and
Pepperdine. You can go in and tell them you just want a crab, steamed.
There are also great Japanese restaurants where you can get rice and
fish.
Closest to Malibu is probably the Wild Oats in Santa MOnica, on Montana
Ave
and 15th. It's got all the good gf stuff and also great fish, meat,
poutry,
produce, etc. Good luck!

Not sure about other markets...try Trader Joe's or whole foods both of
which
can be found in the San Fernando Valley. You'll have to go through the
canyon to get there then go east (or South depending on how it's marked)
on
the 101. The Whole Foods in Woodland Hills (I believe you exit Canoga
and
it's off of Ventura Blvd.) was a goldmine for me when I was out in May.
Had
many GF products that even my Whole Foods and major GF market here don't
carry. There are stores closest to you in Thousand Oaks and Woodland
Hills
Whole Foods Market
21347 Ventura Blvd.
Woodland Hills, CA 91364
818.610.0000

There is a Safeway and Trancas markets in Malibu. Get the Safeway GF
list
online before you go. Trancas in the past has generally carried organic
and
other health items so they might be a viable source. Safeway will be
closer
to where you will be.
Trader Joe's is a GOLDMINE! See if you can get to one. Tell him to
bring
an extra empty suitcase so he can fill it with stuff to bring back! You
can
get a list of the GF items they carry online.
http://traderjoes.com/products/brochures/glutenfree_west.asp
you can get to the main site at Traderjoes.com and find this link from
there. The closest to where you are will be a drive, but I believe
you'd be
closest to the Westlake Village, Canoga Park (not far from the Whole
Foods)
or Santa Monica stores.

Just an FYI there is a little (I mean LITTLE) place to get fresh seafood
on
Pacific Coast Hwy (PCH). I believe it is called Malibu Fish and
Seafood (
ph: 310.456.3430 I think).
Ask them why they are not open for breakfast, if they tell you it's
because
they're catching that day's lunch you have the right place. The fish is
soooo incredible! I'd pick it over any 5 star restaurant any day and
I'm a
major foodie.

Other good choices where you'll find flexibility and varied menus would
be
Shutters on the Beach, and Chinois on Main (That one is in Santa
Monica...one of Wolfgang Pucks place) and Marmalade. Geoffrey's
(pronounced
Joff-rees) and Beaurivage are also good choices but I felt overpriced for
what you get from past experiences. It's been awhile since I have been
to
either and if they have continued to reinvent themselves with the influx
of
new and innovative cuisine then they'll probably still be good choices.

I understand Nobu Matsuhisa opened up a new place (Nobu-Malibu) in the
Country Mart (very chic center) which is supposed to be great and you'll
drop a bundle going there. I'll try it on my next trip out. Lots of
sushi
and pacific rim food if you're into that.

Also In N Out burger is awesome. Just order your burger "protein style"
(without bun) and you get the best burgers on the plant. Fries are GF
they
don't fry anything else there. They cut the potatoes fresh right there
and
nothing is made until you pull up and order after waiting in the long
drive
thru line. But it is worth it. If you go to Whole Foods in Woodland
Hills,
it's not far from there. Don't be discouraged by the long line, it's
worth
the wait. Their chocolate shakes are GF too for an added bonus.

As far as other restaurants, there are really great ones to choose from
...lots of celebrity chefs. Call ahead of time during a non-busy time
and
speak with the matre'd (sp?) or chefs and they're generally very helpful.
Don't rely on the waitstaff I had a really bad contamination experience
despite the server redirecting me from other items that would contain
gluten
at a nice little restaurant in Sherman Oaks. It's the same old routine
wherever you go and it can't hurt to call ahead.
