Thanks very much to all 17 members who took the time to respond to my
questions about rice intolerance.  It seems that some celiacs do have
trouble with rice, but the issues are different for each individual and
it is difficult to draw any general conclusions.

Five members observed that other ingredients are often added to rice, so
that one must be certain that the rice and not the additive is the
problem.

Two members mentioned the specific carbohydrate diet.  An earlier post
by Connie Sarros has dealth with this very well and I have nothing to
add to that.

Two members can tolerate white rice but not brown rice.

One member can tolerate brown rice but not white rice.

Three members can toerate no rice at all.  One of those members is
recently diagnosed and has not had time to fully heal.

Three members have tolerated rice in the past but now can not tolerate
it.  One of these members had been a diagnosed celiac for about one and
one half years before having problems with rice.  Another member had
been a diagnosed celiac for 22 years before developing problems with
rice.

Finally, two members tolerate some rice but only when the diet is
rotated so that rice is eaten in small quantities, in one case, and only
every fourth day, in the other case.

I think the lesson from this in my daughter's case is to proceed
cautiously and work the rice products in to her diet, but be aware that
too much rice has caused some people to develop an intolerance to it.
