a summary of the responses I received:
 
In general - most folks indicated that since (in the US) labeling requirements mandate the disclosure of any wheat content, it would be relatively easy to tell if a particular glucose containing product was safe.
 
On the other hand however, I also received a response that indicated an exemption to the labeling requirements - though still supporting the safety of the product and confirming its GF content :
 
"I'm reviewing the book Gluten-Free Diet : A Comprehensive Resource Guide by Shelley Case, the foremost nutritionist authority on the gluten-free diet in North America. On page 72 in the fourth edition of the book, it explains a study concluded in 2007 that wheat-based maltodextrins, glucose syrups and dextrose are exempt from allergy labeling because the processing of said products render them gluten-free. 
 
Another member shared the following experience:
 
"Thank you for posting this----we found out the HARD way that yes, glucose derived from wheat is totally toxic!  Red Bull drink is 'gluten free', but the glucose is derived from wheat and I got sickened with a full blown, multi-system reaction to the sweetener.  We check ALL glucose derivations in products now, as well as Vitamin E."
