There is an article on Medscape about using hemoglobin levels/anemia to dx
childrens with IBD.

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, Hemoglobin Helps in Screening Children for
IBD
Measuring the combination of erythrocyte sedimentation rate and hemoglobin vs
serologic testing had higher sensitivity and specificity in screening
children for inflammatory bowel disease.

While anemia is often an early symptom of celiac, no mention of celiac is
made in the article. It does not appear that celiac was even considered so
appropriate dx testing could be done.

Too bad the NIH isn't actively targeting it Celiac Awareness Campaign
directly to the GI community..
