A number of people on this list have pointed out the dearth of research on
celiac syndrome and other gluten-dependent conditions, and noted that
pharmaceutical companies would not expect such research to be especially
profit-making. Don Wiss has pointed out that HMOs might, on the other
hand, find it useful to learn more about these conditions. Many other list
participants have pointed out problems getting an accurate diagnosis.

Would it be appropriate and feasible for a committee of CELIAC list
participants to draft a letter addressed to all of the major HMOs in
order to open a dialogue about research possibilities, the HMOs
diagnostic practices, and their education programs for participating
clinicians?

If many list participants were to consider such a letter appropriate,
would one or more of the list moderators be willing to coordinate the
process of formulating the letter or perhaps identify an appropriate party
to do so?
