Hello listmates!

A while back I posted a message about places to eat in Key West & Cozumel.
I really appreciate all of the responses. I did receive a list of places
to eat in Key West. But...I think once we get to Cozumel I will eat a big
breakfast on the ship and then take my own snacks to munch on through out
the day while we explore the city and participate in any activities. Even
when it comes to eating on the ship, everyone said to be very leary about
everything. Buffets are cross contamination heaven. Also...the ship's
waitstaff may not fully understand our needs, so I'll be checking every
single time! =)

Here is the response I received from Royal Caribbean along a couple of the
emails from the listmates.

Thanks again!
Tricia

Royal Caribbean's Response:
I have received your notice regarding gluten-free meals and will forward it
to the ship.

Once on board please meet with the Maitre 'D to review the menus and
address any questions you may have.

The ship does not have a gluten-free menu per se. However, there is a daily
alternative menu that includes plain, roasted beef, chicken, fish, plain
rice and baked potatoes. The ship also bakes it’s own gluten free breads.

Guests are allowed to bring on board their own supply of dry, nonperishable
food items such as cookies, chips, cracker, energy bars, etc. You may also
bring individual packets of your favorite salad dressing.

Royal Caribbean International will not receive, store prepare or serve any
meals brought on board by our guests. These meals will be discarded
immediately.

We have lived in Key West for the last 2 years and my wife is a Celiac.
There are places in Key West to eat Gluten free, but the main problem is
getting the wait staff at resturants to pay attention long enough to
understand your needs.

Here are some places we have had good luck:

--------------------------

THE CAFE, A MOSTLY VEGETARIAN PLACE

Restaurant, good food and Gluten free friendly if you take the time to
explain it to them.

509 Southard St
305/296-5515

--------------------------------------

Two Cuban restaurants that we have had good luck with, mostly due to the
fact that Cuban food doesn't use gluten very much. My wife has had good
luck with the roast pork and roast chicken. Sometimes it can be difficult
to explain things to the staff, my Spanish isn't up to it.

El Siboney (Cuban Cuisine)
900 Catherine Street, Key West, Florida
Phone: (305) 296-4184

CHICHARRONES RESTAURANT
1223 WHITE ST
(305) 292-0160

--------------------------------------

Meteor Smokehouse

Great BBQ place and most of their main entrees like ribs and chicken are
gluten free. Need to watch the sides and make sure they keep the cornbread
away from your food.

404 Southard Street
(305) 294-5602

--------------------------------------

Sugar Apple

Health Food Store

917 Simonton Str.
305-292-0043

-------------------------------

Waterfront Market

Market with some Gluten Free items

201 William Street
(305) 296-0778

Hi ,just spent a week in Key West in February. The must try place is blue
heaven. The menu was GF friendly, that is there were several items that
were GF right on the menu and the manager came out to speak with me to go
over the possibilities with me and listened to all my needs for good
sanitation to avoid cross contamination. There is also a vegan health food
store called Sugar Apple health food. The oysters at Turtle Kraals are
wonderful but most everything else is out. As usual any of the high end
restaurants would be able to accomodate, Pisces is the one for
seafood.......It is $$$$ but the chef was the owner of the famous Cafe De
Artistes. So a memorable meal is guaranteed.

The cruise line will pack you a lunch if you want. You could also bring
raisens, nuts and a little hard candy with you when you go ashore. We
cruise a lot, but I wouldn't recommend eating anything in Mexico unless
it is a coke or bag of chips. You can eat such a good breakfast that you
wont need to eat until you return to the ship. I will be going to the
caribbean with my husband next week. I have already baked my gluten free
bread and frozen it. I also bring gf muffins and gf pasta on board. I ask
the chef to serve me these items throughout the cruise, giving them these
items when I board. Some cruise lines will even bake you a gf cake if you
bring it on board. Carnival is simply terrific about gf diets.
