Country Life Vitamins, in conjunction with the Gluten Intolerance Group of
North America (GIG), is working to improve the health of people with celiac
disease and to bring about awareness of gluten intolerances. May, is National
Celiac Disease Awareness Month, but people?s health is important all year long,
 and so Country Life Vitamins and GIG are committed to spreading awareness
throughout the year to consumers, health professionals and retailers.

Undiagnosed celiac disease inhibits the body's ability to absorb and digest
nutrients properly, leading to vitamin deficiencies. The only treatment for
people with celiac disease is the adoption of a strict, gluten free diet.
However, that may not be enough to return a person to total health. When foods
with gluten (which is found in wheat, rye, and barley) are removed from the
diet, so are a number of important nutrients. The nutrients often lacking in a
gluten free diet include B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, and fiber. Other
nutrients that can be missing from a gluten free diet might include vitamin D,
magnesium, and folate (a B- vitamin). Without changes to the gluten free diet
or  the use of nutritional supplements, these deficiencies can last a  lifetime.

One out of 133 people in the United States has the genetic predisposition
for celiac disease. For every person diagnosed, 90 go undiagnosed for years.
Besides celiac disease, there are other forms of non-celiac gluten intolerances.
 It is estimated that more than five percent of people follow a gluten free
diet,  including people with autism spectrum disorders, chronic pain and
chronic  fatigue syndromes, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is
still  unclear how effective the diet is in treating non-celiac gluten
intolerances.  People who want to try a gluten free diet should first be tested for
celiac  disease. Regardless of the reasons, over 15 million people follow a gluten
free  diet and are at risk for nutritional deficiencies.
