Dear List Members,
on August 25th I posted a request about gf in Canterbury, England.
Thank you very much to everyone who responded! Here is the summary containing also my father's and my experiences.

Some people wrote that in the UK in general coeliac disease is very well known among wait staff and chefs, so that they had no problems.

Contents (according to the questions I posed):
----------------------------------------------------------------
1) Restaurant, Hotels, and B&B lists
2) "Request for the chef" explaining also about contaminations
3) Gf products in shops/supermarkets

1) Restaurant, Hotels, and B&B lists
------------------------------------
The coeliac society of UK has several infos: www.coeliac.org.uk. To obtain the infos you have to register to get a password. I wrote to the coeliac society of UK [log in to unmask], but got no answer so far.

A small, friendly deli and cafe serving excellent coffee and homemade organic and free range British food. Favourites include organic shepherds pie and gluten free chocolate cake. Open Monday to Saturday 9.00am-7.30pm.

c) Wagamama. I found it good, but very spicy.

d) Beefeater (family restaurant chain) and Pizza Express offer gf in England (the list member was not sure if these chains are in Canterbury as well).

e) A couple of places in Canterbury are listed on this website:
www.gluten-free-onthego.com (also one organic shop, where you can buy gf bread: http://www.canterbury-wholefoods.co.uk/).

f) Cafe Des Amis
Contacts: 01227 464390
93-95, St Dunstans, Canterbury, CT2 8AD
Mexican Restaurant
My father went there. He was worried that it could be too spicy (since Mexican), but it was not. It was very fine.

g) Kathton House
Contacts: 01227 719999
6 High Street, Sturry, nr Canterbury, CT2 0BD
British Restaurant
My father's host said that Sturry is a district of ill repute, so they did not go there.

h) Weatherspoons
Contacts: 01227 463339
Burgate, Canterbury, CT12HG
British Pub
My father has been there several times. He took ice-cream and cappuccino.
My father's host was not sure if at Weatherspoons they are really fond of the coealiac problem. They list naan bread as gf, but according to my father's host this bread normally contains gluten.

Some negative experiences by a list member. Not specifically in Canterbury (but these chains might be in Canterbury, too):
"The only problems I experienced were after eating at chains: The Slug and the Lettuce, probably my fault there because I couldn't resist the Bangers and Mash and was horribly sick later - it may not even have been gluten. The other place was Prezza (sp) an Italian place where I had good minestrone soup without pasta, but where they served my salad with croutons and instead of changing the salad, obviously picked the croutons out, except that they left some in there!"

2) "Request for the chef" explaining also contaminations
--------------------------------------------------------
A card in English can be found here: http://www.celiactravel.com/gluten-free-cards/11-english.html
However, I needed something explaining about contamination (since my father cannot speak english well enough to explain it himself) so I slightly modified this text http://www.zoeliakie-treff.de/zoeliakie/viewtopic.php?t=24968&highlight=englisch
in order to create the following:
----------------------
A request to the cook
----------------------

Since I suffer from coeliac disease (gluten intolerance), when preparing my meal, the following has to be taken into account:

My meal may not contain any components of wheat, rye, barley, oats or spelt. This means that flour, breadcrumbs, wheat semolina, pasta, bread, beer and malt are prohibited.
All industrially produced ingredients such as canned foods, instant meals, mixed herbs and spices, instant stock and sauces, as well as cookware with the tiniest residue of flour, breadcrumbs or pasta still
on them can become very problematic for me.

Please check the additives listed on food packaging.

The following foodstuffs are permitted: rice, potatoes, fresh vegetables, meat and fish (unfloured), pure herbs and spices, vinegar, oil and milk products without additives containing gluten or the grains mentioned above.

Thank you very much for your efforts!
--------------------
One list member suggested to take a restaurant card in Polish, since some wait staff does not speak English well and seems to come from Poland.

3) Gf products in shops/supermarkets
------------------------------------
In England gf products can be found in the chains Tesco, Sainsbury, and Waitrose. Also in Marks and Spencer, ASDA (Walmart), and Morrisons. Prices are reasonable. I know there is a Tesco (in the city centre, without gf bread, only cookies, biscuits, crackers, and such stuff) and a Sainsbury in Canterbury, I do not know about the other places.
One person mentioned that in England he was able to buy many traditional English specialties such as crumpets, Bakewell Tarts, Steamed syrup pudding, as well as pita bread, frozen chicken and mushroom pies in pastry. No experience if they can be easily found in Canterbury as well.

Gf bread can be bought here: http://www.canterbury-wholefoods.co.uk/
(s. 1) e) above).

Best regards,
Maria Paola
