I asked whether people have had a similar reaction to the one I had. I received four responses to my question (and a lot of emails offering speculative theories about what happened). The answers I received are below.

Two moms wrote to say that their kids ate Sweettarts and didn't have a reaction. In addition I received the following two answers:
-------------------
I cannot eat M&Ms - makes me vomit - but they are GF. So there is something else in them... Perhaps the coloring...
--------------------
Various gluten free candies give me nausea because I have "dumping" (rapid gastric emptying) as a reaction to some sweets. Jelly Bellys are the worst. I also get a pounding pulse and even a severe headache if I am dumb enough to over indulge in the sweets which cause me problems. My reactions to individual sweets seem to vary wildly. That's the autonomic nervous system for you...LOL!
