My family returned from Canada earlier today so I wanted to get some things
out to all of you before I lose what I have captured in my head.

I would first like to thank the many Canadian followers of the listserv that
gave me information for GF within Canada as well as in Toronto. The best
information I received was to check the website www.theceliacscene.com
<http://www.theceliacscene.com/> . I found a lot of information at that
website.

In Niagara Falls, we have been anxious to try Jimmy Buffet’s chain,
Margaritaville that opened earlier this summer. Unfortunately, their GF Menu
is not up and running as of yet- however the chef Nick was very helpful. My
daughter ordered a hamburger without the bun and GF French fries. Even after
Nick spoke to us at the table, my daughter was still feeling anxious, so
upon seeing him out of the kitchen, we approached him a second time- this
time speaking directly to my daughter and answering her questions.(she’s 10
and he did it without expressing frustration or exasperation). We had a
great time at Margaritaville. There are other options on the menu, but we
never got beyond what she was asking for- so please check ahead. The GF menu
is forthcoming per what he told me.

We ate at Montana’s, a Canadian chain. The restaurant is without a GF menu
but does carry an extensive allergy guide to follow with the menu in picking
out your food. We ate at the Montana’s in Cambridge- on Heplerin(?) Road. The
manager and staff could not have been more accommodating. My daughter wasn’t
as eager to eat here-so we stuck to safe items for her such as a salad and
cucumber coins off the kids menu to be paired with what I had brought for
her. However, based on what the staff was telling me and had I been the
Celiac in the family, I would have been assured that I could eat with very
little chance of contamination. I am at a point with my daughter where I am
trying to advise but follow her lead with regards to her comfort level.

The last place we ate was at Kelseys in Guelph- Woodlawn Rd. E . That
specific restaurant had a gluten free menu to offer, however it was modest
and not geared toward a child appetite. The staff was very helpful and kind
and willing to work with us for our many questions. Please be advised the
Gluten free menu was not on Kelsey’s letterhead but an 8 ˝ x 11 sheet of
paper that the kitchen manager had put together. We met the owner, and he
is very enthused about furthering their Gluten free options so I will be
forwarding him some information as well as writing to Kelsey’s headquarters
with some encouragement to continue with this in all of their chains. Please
note the Celiac Scene website mentioned that Kelsey’s had an allergy guide,
not a menu, so again, don’t know if the menu I saw was specific to this
location. They did bring me the allergy guide after many questions to the
kitchen.

African Lion Safari had no food options that I saw. It may be possible to
get a salad, but many of them are pre-made and believe they came with
croutons. Definitely need to carry a food and snacks for visiting there.

Ontario Science Center- My husband also has a peanut/tree nut allergy so he
spoke to the cook behind the grill. I could not hear anything they said, but
the body language said it all.. “no GF items for food in the Center”.
Unfortunately, because of the way they have their main dining area set up,
whatever is naturally GF is contaminated in the prep or cooking areas. We
did find Yoplait yogurt for her to pair with her lunch that we had packed.
There is fresh fruit to pick from but difficult to get what you wanted due
to how the kitchen was set up. Please go to the Science Center, tons of
fun.. but be prepared to bring your own food.

All in all, it was a great visit, we survived the QEW and the Canadian
restaurants really did all they could to help us have a wonderful meal
together. Enjoy the rest of the summer!
