Hello List Mates,
As we move into the 2012 GF travel season I'm sure we'll all be sharing our GF adventures. So let me be among the first - Today I was on a stop-over in Seattle and visited Sharpes Roasthouse near the Seatac Airport. I was excited to see that they had a separate gluten-free menu. Among the variety of tasty sounding “GF” options, they offered GF fries. I could hardly wait! But on closer inspection I learned that they do NOT have a designated GF fryer. All of their breaded items go into the same fryer. Yet Fries are clearly offered on their GF menu! Somehow they think that because they sport a standard disclaimer - stating that nothing can be guaranteed 100% GF – they get a free pass. Offering a GF menu without an understanding the importance of our issues just seems unconscionable to me. Offering obviously contaminated items on a GF menu demonstrates a total lack of understanding about cross contamination, and thus the rest of the GF menu must remain suspect. In my opinion, this is a prime example of a restaurant trying to cash in on the gluten-free movement without doing their homework, demonstrating a total disregard for our gluten-free community.
My thanks to the helpful server who gave me the "heads up".
Sincerely,
Deb Wheaton
