GMO stands for "genetically modified organism." If you heard anything
about the StarLink corn debacle, then you know that scientists are
taking genes from one entity and inserting them into another. This is
referred to as genetic engineering, genetic modification, biotech and a
host of other words.

Initials such as GMO, GE, GM, etc. refer to these processes.

There is quite a debate in the scientific community as to the
benefits/harm of genetic engineering. With the StarLink corn, a corn
intended and approved by the FDA ONLY for animal feed made its way into
the human food chain. It was NOT approved for human consumption due to
possible allergens.

You can count on GMOs being present in EVERY food product that isn't
labelled "No GMOs" or "GMO-Free" because the FDA does _not_ require the
labelling of food that contains GMOs. Agribusiness, commercial food
producers, and food retailer lobbies have worked hard to convince the
watchdog groups that labelling a food as containing GMOs would "suggest"
that something is wrong with it when, as far as they are concerned (or
would at least have us believe), the food product is just fine.

Well, on this list we have seen repeatedly how just minute cross
contamination (ie: cereal conveyer belts, etc.) of wheat/gluten can be
detrimental to a celiac sufferer. With GMOs, celiacs and everyone else
has no true idea exactly what is in the food product they are consuming.

Flounder genes spliced into tomato plants to make them hardier,
pesticides spliced into the soybean to control bugs and other pests --
these are but a couple examples of what Agribusiness is attempting to
feed us.

If a wheat gene is inserted into some other product, the FDA does not
consider this harmful & does not require it to be labelled as wheat is
said to be fit for human consumption. WE know just how much damage that
could REALLY cause for us... People with food allergies will have no
idea what they are really eating unless the product is labelled.

There are many groups fighting for mandatory GMO labelling, but many
former Monsanto, et. al. folks occupy high positions in government -- or
back pockets... So, the fight has to come from the grass-roots level.

If you want to be absolutely sure the product you consume is
gluten-free, then purchase ONLY products labelled as such. Hidden
reactions could come from eating something you only thought was safe...

"No GMOs," "GMO-Free..." THESE are the only labels we can count on for
insuring a true gluten-free diet.
